water view from screen porch with sofa in outdoor fabric

COASTAL COTTAGE

The inspiration for this home interior was the cottage’s gorgeous bay views. To keep the focus on the water, walls were painted a warm white. Ceilings were painted a soothing gray to reference the sky. Seating was upholstered in soft, pet-friendly fabrics. Careful space planning allows multiple views and plenty of seating for family gatherings. The bath’s custom live-edge vanity and glass shower with subtle accent tile enlarge the small space. The bayside home feels casually comfortable, with an air of sophistication. Now it’s just as tempting to stay inside as to go out!

This project nicely illustrates how existing furnishings can be repurposed. Refurbishing lets you keep quality furnishings, or those with sentimental value, without limiting your choices in decor or color palette. And its’s great for the environment and your budget!

When she moved from the city to be on the water, she wanted new surroundings, but to keep cherished furnishings. Many of the pieces from the Chic Condo project were repurposed as part of the move, to reflect the more casual style of her waterfront home. In these side-by-side examples, you can see how the dining chairs were reupholstered in a stain-resistant fabric in a more subtle pattern. In addition, the scalloped bottoms of the seats were reshaped for a cleaner, more modern line. The base of the coffee table in the porch sitting area was removed, ensuring that the water view through the room from the bedroom is not obstructed. The sofa in the sitting area was reupholstred in a fade-resistant fabric, and the two seat cushions were replaced with a single bench cushion. This makes a comfortable spot to curl up and read a book, and expands seating for two into three.
